What Sixt's Development Implies for Your Following Cars And Truck Rental

Last Updated on July 24, 2022 by Elizabeth

sixt-expands-1024x576-2.jpg

The name might not be as recognizable as Avis or Hertz. But Sixt Rent a Car has become a bigger fish in the North American rental car pond. The German firm expanded its footprint by scooping up U.S. locations from the recently bankrupt Advantage Rent a Car and has also added several Canadian locations. Here’s what Sixt’s expansion might mean for your future travels.

Here’s Where Sixt is Expanding in the U.S.

In 2020, Sixt took over 10 airport car rental branches in the U.S. from Advantage Rent a Car. This allowed the firm to gain a presence in five new major markets and raising its profile in five others.

Ask AutoSlash for a Quote on a Cheap Car Rental

Sixt took over five new airport concessions at Boston (BOS), Houston (IAH) and three airports serving the greater New York City area (JFK, LGA and EWR). In addition, Sixt beefed up its existing presence at five other U.S. airports: Las Vegas (LAS), Orlando (MCO), Denver (DEN), Maui (OGG) and Honolulu (HNL).

That expansion in the U.S. has continued. As recently as spring of 2022, Sixt opened new branches in Charlotte, Baltimore, Cincinnati and more.

Also in 2022, Sixt opened its first Canadian locations, first in downtown Vancouver’s Library Square and then in Toronto.

Here’s What Sixt’s Expansion Means to You

Not only do these acquisitions make Sixt a bigger player in the North America, but it also helps the German firm overcome what has always been one of its persistent drawbacks. The company has never been a good choice for taking a long-range road trip, because with few locations, Sixt had been forced to limit the geographic region where you could take its vehicles to within a four-hour radius from one of the limited Sixt locations. Now, with a larger footprint, Sixt becomes a valid choice for more travelers—in the northeast as well as other places.

Don’t Forget to Sign up for Sixt Rewards

Even if you only rent a car once in a blue moon, it always makes sense to join the rental car company’s loyalty program so you can take advantage of benefits such as upgrades, free rentals, and other perks.

Let AutoSlash Track Your Car Rental for Price Drops

Sixt Rewards is a fairly straightforward program when it comes to accruing benefits and an easy way to advance in status.

The German rental firm Sixt is unlike most other major rental companies. Drive past one of their locations, and you might see the usual vehicles such as Chevrolets, Fords, and Nissans. But you’ll also likely to see luxury cars from Audi, BMW, Jaguar, Land Rover, and Mercedes-Benz, since the goal of the company is to provide a differentiated experience for consumers.

Your Last Gas Receipt Can Reverse This Cars And Truck Rental Cost

Last Updated on July 7, 2022 by Elizabeth

car-rental-gas-refuel-fee-1024x576-2.jpgPhoto credit: Shutterstock

Most travelers know the importance of returning a rental car with a full tank of gas. But even if you follow the rules, you can still sometimes get burned by an onerous car rental fee. That’s because Avis, Budget and other rental car companies now have connected-car fleets.

Ask AutoSlash for a Quote on a Cheap Car Rental

Connected cars allow you to manage your entire rental through the car rental company app. That includes nifty tricks, like locking and unlocking car doors via smartphone. They also tell the rental company exactly how much gas remains in the tank, down to the tenth of a gallon. Armed with this information, rental car companies have become stricter in requiring you to fill up close to your return. If you return the car with the gas tank a smidge less than full, you may be charged a gas refueling fee. It’s the very definition of getting nickeled and dimed by your rental car company.

How to Avoid the Gas Refueling Fee

In many cases, the only way to avoid this car rental fee is to provide a copy of the receipt from your last gas fill up. The receipt must show the gas station address, which must be within five miles of the rental car return location. It also must show the number of gallons purchased, as well as the cost.

If you return the vehicle during business hours, you will be told whether you get credit for a full tank. If not, you might be able to visit a nearby gas station to top it off.

After-hours returns leave you open to finding a nasty surprise on your bill. If you discover you were charged the gas refueling fee in error, you can appeal the charge by providing a receipt for your last gas purchase before returning the car. It’s a really simple way to avoid this car rental fee.

Do Not Prepay for Gas

The agent at the rental car counter will likely try to sell you on their prepaid gas program, where you get charged for a tank of gas at a cheaper-than-average per-gallon price. Sounds like a good deal, right? Of course, there’s a catch.

Let AutoSlash Track Your Car Rental for Price Drops

When you prepay for the gas, you’re paying for the full tank. If you bring it back a quarter full or even 90 percent full, there’s no refund for the gas you left in the tank. If you don’t use every last drop, you’re paying for gas you didn’t use. Anything more than bringing it back on fumes is free money for them and a higher average price per gallon for you.

Just How Much Auto Rental Supplemental Responsibility Insurance Policy Do You Need?

Last Updated on July 11, 2022 by Kristin

Supplemental_Liability_Insurance-1024x576-2.jpgPhoto credit: Shutterstock

One of the most stressful things about renting a car is understanding what all the different kinds of insurance cover. You may wonder if you need the rental car company’s supplemental liability insurance (SLI). Here’s everything you need to know about this insurance option.

What is Supplemental Liability Insurance (SLI) for a Rental Car?

If you are in an accident, SLI covers damage caused to other parties’ vehicles, as well any expenses due to bodily injury or death. Unlike Personal Accident Insurance (PAI), SLI focuses on covering the expenses that come from harming people or objects outside of your own rental car. You can purchase supplemental liability insurance from the rental car company at varying prices. For example, Enterprise’s policy averages between $8 and $17 per day, depending on the pickup location. Budget’s policy is a flat $15 per day.

Do You Need To Purchase SLI When Renting a Car?

In the U.S., every state requires a minimum amount of liability insurance. You may already have liability coverage through your personal auto insurance if you own a car. But understand that the minimum amount of liability insurance varies by state and may not be enough. If a state requires a minimum of $25,000 in liability coverage, that is unlikely to cover all the potential expenses.

You may also have “umbrella liability insurance,” a low-cost policy added to your auto, homeowner’s or renter’s insurance. It can provide extra protection while driving your car or a rental. Also, be aware that U.S. auto insurance policies often don’t provide any coverage abroad. You may want to — or you’ll be required to — purchase liability insurance if you’re traveling overseas.

How Much Supplemental Liability Insurance Do You Need?

Experts suggest carrying liability insurance at least equal to your net worth. Whether you need to purchase supplemental liability insurance largely depends on if you have an auto insurance policy. If you don’t own a car, it’s wise to take the supplemental option to make sure you’re covered.

If you plan to purchase supplemental liability insurance from the rental car company, check whether it will be sufficient based on your net worth. Be sure to read the fine print about the coverage limits for supplemental liability insurance (SLI). For example, National Car Rental recently changed its policy limit to $300,000 in Supplemental Liability Protection (SLP). Its sister companies Enterprise and Alamo also offer that amount. Avis, Budget and Thrifty offer SLI limits of up to $1 million or $2 million, depending on the state.

You may not need this extra liability coverage if you already have a personal auto insurance policy. Before renting a car, check your personal auto insurance policy to see the coverage limit.

The Bottom Line

If you don’t have personal auto insurance, buying SLI from the car rental company will help protect you in case of an accident. However, you’ll want to check whether the amount of coverage offered under this policy is equal to your net worth. If using a personal auto policy, make sure the liability coverage applies to rental cars.

Is It Easier to Rent a Cars And Truck with a Bank Card Or Debit Card?

Last Updated on July 10, 2022 by Michael

rent-car-with-debit-card-1024x576-2.jpg

Want to rent a car with a debit card? It’s possible, but you need to meet a more rigorous set of conditions, which are in place precisely because rental car companies would much rather that you use a credit card.

So why do rental car companies want you to pay with a credit card? In a nutshell, because it’s far less risky for them.

Why Rental Car Companies Prefer Credit Cards

When you rent a car, you drive away with a valuable asset. The rental car company wants to have recourse if you damage it or fail to return it. Rental car companies would rather that you pay for a rental with a credit card because it reassures them that:

  • You’re an actual person with a real identity. The credit card company has already vetted you.
  • You will be able to pay for the rental and for any damages that might happen.
  • The rental company trusts renters with good credit scores. A financial institution trusted you with unsecured credit.
  • You will return the vehicle because you want the hold and deposit on your card returned to you,

If you pay for a rental car with a debit card and don’t return the car, the rental car company might have more difficulty recovering funds from you. Rent with a credit card, and it’s more likely that the company can track you down and get its money back.

Credit Cards vs. Debit Cards

Some personal financial experts recommend not having a credit card at all, even for rental cars. Dave Ramsey says that he always pays for rental cars with a debit card without issues and that there’s never a need for a rental car company to run a credit check in order to rent a car. Yet he also adds the disclaimer that you should check in advance with the rental car provider or even use a ride-sharing service like Uber instead.

Ask AutoSlash for a Quote on a Cheap Car Rental

The problem is that not all renters are like Dave Ramsey—rich, famous, debt-free and able to have a hold on their account of the estimated rental costs plus up to $500. Many renters would not have that $500 cushion in their bank accounts.

But Ramsey misses something important. There may be valid reasons for a rental car company to give more scrutiny to rental car transactions made with debit cards. Company policies are based on big data—billions of past rental car transactions that show debit cards pose greater risk.

What’s the best reason to use a credit card to pay for a car rental? A credit card usually provides some form of insurance coverage for rental cars. This makes rental car companies happy because it means the renter likely has insurance coverage for any damage that happens to the vehicle. The rental car company knows the credit card company benefits will likely cover any damage to the rental car.

Requirements to Rent a Car with a Debit Card

There are a lot of rental car companies in the US. We narrowed our analysis to companies that provide more than 97 percent of the domestic rental car market: Avis Budget Group (Avis, Budget, and Payless), Enterprise Holdings (Alamo, Enterprise, National), Fox Rent A Car, Hertz Global Holdings (Dollar, Thrifty, Hertz), Rent-A-Wreck, Silvercar and Sixt.

None the major rental car firms will rent to debit card holders with the same ease as renting to credit card holders. At all the major rental car companies, a customer with a debit card can expect that the rental car company will:

  • require a bank-issued debit card. Prepaid card won’t fly.
  • place a security deposit on the card that you will not get back until after the car has been returned.
  • run a credit check.
  • require multiple forms of ID and possibly proof of residence.
  • ask for proof of insurance.
  • require proof of pre-paid travel

There may be additional restrictions:

  • Additional age restrictions based upon payment method
  • Local driver restrictions
  • Major city prohibitions
  • Rural area prohibitions
  • Vehicle type restrictions
  • Additional driver restrictions

Fox Rent A Car: Debit cards must have Visa, MasterCard, or Discover logo. Round-trip itinerary and/or credit check through Experian plus deposit based upon traveler type. Fox restricts car classes to Economy, Compact, Midsize, Standard, Full-size and Minivan. Debit card users cannot add additional drivers.

Silvercar: Customers may not rent with a debit card.

Sixt: Debit card policy is based per location, is entirely discretionary but requires two different forms of ID. In-state renters can only rent up to an Intermediate Car. Out-of-state residents cannot rent premium, luxury, or extraordinary vehicles. Sixt can hold up to three times the expected rental cost as a deposit.

Rent A Wreck: Agencies only accept debit cards that are linked to checking accounts. The company will verify that insurance runs at least 30 days beyond the rental. Paying with a debit card adds $150 to the security deposit. In addition, the agency typically requires three forms of identification (driver’s license plus two others).

Renting a Car With a Debit Card

  • The rental car company may hold security deposits for up to three weeks after the rental ends.
  • Debit cards don’t have the same consumer protections as credit cards for billing disputes.
  • Many credit cards provide insurance coverage for damage to a rental vehicle that a debit card will not. If a renter wants rental car damage protection, the renter may have to buy it separately
  • Credit cards put the consumer in a stronger position to contest charges than debit cards do, because a credit-card user does not lose access to the disputed funds during a dispute.
  • The rental car company has direct access to the checking account after a rental if there’s alleged damage.

Disclaimer: the information above is a general overview of policies and is accurate to the best of our knowledge. However, policies vary by location and can change at any time. Please contact the rental agency directly or carefully review the booking terms and conditions before planning to use a debit card to qualify for a rental. When reserving a rental car through AutoSlash, please note that AutoSlash cannot be responsible for rentals denied by the rental agency and is unable to waive or reimburse any cancellation penalties associated with a denied rental. AutoSlash recommends all customers use a credit card to qualify for their rentals.

Snag a Costco Discount at These 4 Rental Cars And Truck Firms

Last Updated on July 7, 2022 by Elizabeth

What’s in your wallet? If you carry a Costco membership card, it can score you a fantastic rate on your next car rental. The Costco car rental discount depends on the rental company. Costco has partnerships with four major rental car companies: Avis, Alamo, Budget and Enterprise.

Costco does not have partnerships with other major brands like Hertz, Dollar, Thrifty, National, and Payless. It also does not partner with any of the discount brands such as Sixt, Advantage, or Fox.

At AutoSlash, we know a thing or two about hunting for car rental deals. We compare rates, factor in your memberships and crunch the numbers on discounts to locate the best possible rates. Very often, having a Costco membership can be the deciding factor on snagging the lowest price on a given rental car search.

Ask AutoSlash for a Quote on a Cheap Car Rental

A basic Costco membership starts at $60 per year. We find that an average renter can often recoup this fee after a single car rental. If you rent a car a few times a year, you’re guaranteed to save money with your membershiop—and that’s in addition to all the other discounts and benefits on everyday services offered through Costco.

Rental Car Companies with Costco Deals

To squeeze the most value out of your membership, toss out brand loyalty and be open-minded. Costco car rental discounts are available with four rental car brands. If you don’t have time to do the research on which deal is best, ask AutoSlash for a quote and we’ll do the legwork for you.

Costco Discount with Avis

Avis is always running multiple promotions that offer Costco members the chance to snag free rental days and save up to 25 percent on rates. In addition, members get the additional driver fee waived.

Costco Deal with Budget

Budget also offers multiple promotions to Costco members, with the chance to snag free rental days and save up to 30 percent on rates. In addition, members get the additional driver fee waived in the United States only.

Costco Discount with Enterprise

Like the other partners, Enterprise offers a Costco car rental discount to its members, with free upgrades and savings on rates. In addition, members get the additional driver fee waived in the United States only in the U.S., Canada, UK, France, Germany, Ireland, Netherlands and Spain..

Costco Deal with Alamo

Alamo offers its “skip the counter” service and multiple promotions to Costco members, with free upgrades and savings on rates. In addition, members get the additional driver fee waived in the U.S., Canada, UK, France, Germany, Ireland, Netherlands and Spain..

How to Book a Membership Discount on a Rental Car

Ask AutoSlash for a quote. The only way to know for sure if a Costco discount is in fact the best possible deal is to do your due diligence and comparison shop. You can do this research yourself, or let AutoSlash crunch the numbers for you. We scour the internet for discounts and coupons and factor in your memberships to groups such as Costco, AAA and AARP, so you always know all the bases were covered. Best of all, our service is free.

Book the “Pay Later” rate. Costco does not support prepaid rates, which can sometimes be significantly lower than the “Pay Later” rates offered.

Let AutoSlash Track Your Car Rental for Price Drops

Remember, we factor in your Costco membership plus all other available deals and promotional rates so you always know you’re getting the lowest price. Even though Costco often has excellent deals with the companies they partner with, the best deal may actually be with a company they don’t partner with.

Track your reservation. Rental car rates go up and down. New discounts pop up all the time. AutoSlash can track your reservation and let you know of any price drops so you can rebook at the lower rate. With this service, renters save an additional 30 percent, on average.

With gas prices at record highs, we’re all eager to find ways to save at the gas pump. Stop & Shop’s GO Rewards program gives customers opportunities to earn rewards and save on purchases. The program includes Stop & Shop gas stations to participating Shell gas stations. Established over a century ago, Stop & Shop operates more than 400 stores throughout New York, New Jersey, and New England. Here’s how to save on gas with Stop & Shop GO Rewards.

Ask AutoSlash for a Quote on a Cheap Car Rental

GO Rewards is a free digital loyalty program that allows shoppers to earn points for almost everything in-store and online.

Get One Point Per Dollar Spent on Groceries

How to save on gas with Stop & Shop GO Rewards? You earn one point per dollar spent on groceries at Stop & Shop online and in person, with some exclusions. You can access your Stop & Shop rewards in your account using the mobile app or website. Every week, you’ll see new offers to earn points and new Special Rewards to spend your points on.

There is one caveat. You have only 30 days from the date you earned the points to designate them, then an additional 30 days after that to redeem the points. Unused points expire and are non-refundable.

Power Tip: Don’t forget to take a peek at your online account. You can earn additional points with exclusive offers based on what you already buy. But be mindful of the fine print on special offers, since redeemed points expire per the offer details.

How to Redeem Points for Epic Savings

While previously only gas rewards were available with GO Rewards, Stop & Shop recently opened things up to redeem your points in a variety of ways, including money off your next grocery order or donating to a local food bank. Points can be redeemed at Stop & Shop fuel stations and participating Shell gas stations.

Let AutoSlash Track Your Car Rental for Price Drops

Every 100 points are redeemable for a discount of 10 cents per gallon, with a maximum of $1.50 off per gallon for up to 20 gallons. The maximum number of redeemable points in a single fill-up is 1,500 points, or $1.50 per gallon.

How to Sign Up for Stop & Shop’s GO Rewards Program

There are several ways to sign up for Stop & Shop’s GO Rewards, which allows you to earn and redeem fuel points. You can sign up for an account using the mobile app or on the website.

Don’t shop at Stop & Shop? Check out fuel points programs at other chains like Kroger and Marathon.

The best paths for a journey across the United States

The best travel bucket list experience in the USA is road trips. From deserts to mountains, from mountains to beaches. Find the perfect route for you

Pack your bags and hit the road! The United States offers many options of road trips across the country with wonderful landscapes and amazing places to visit. But first, here are some tips to make your road trip in the United States as safe and comfortable as possible!

Crossing the country requires time, after all it is a huge distance. So make sure you rent a good car, with enough miles and adequate space to make everyone who travels with you comfortable. Also, read carefully the rules for returning the car and the insurance available in your rental. Rentcars compares prices from over 200 rental companies around the world and you can choose the best option for your budget!

Another important point to note is that on the road, especially on some routes in the United States, it may take a while to find any shops or gas stations. So fill up your gas tank and buy some meals that are easy to eat in the car.

If you plan to continue your trip through Canada or Mexico, also check the requirements for crossing the border. This information you can confirm directly with your chosen rental company.

Now, let’s get down to business: the best routes for a roadtrip across the USA!

1. Route 66

route-66-1024x684-2.jpg

Who doesn’t know Route 66? One of the most famous in the world, which has even been the inspiration for many songs and movies. Starting in Chicago and ending in Santa Monica, Route 66 passes through 9 states: Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, Nevada, and California.

Along the way, you can stay in motels and dine in kitschy 1950s restaurants that hark back to an America of the past! As well as seeing some roadside attractions like the Catoosa Whale, Cadillac Ranch, and Twin Arrows. But if you want to enjoy nature, you can visit the Grand Canyon or Petrified Forrest National Park.

Some must-see Route 66 stops:

  • Chicago
  • St. Louis
  • Amarillo
  • Calico Ghost Town
  • Grand Canyon
  • Laughlin
  • Santa Monica Pier

The most popular is to start in Chicago and end in Santa Monica, California. But, you can do it your way! Just keep an eye on your GPS and plan at least 2 weeks for this adventure.

2. Pacific Coast

Pacific-Coast-2-1024x575-1.jpg

Here is a classic road trip along the California coast! Live a surreal experience among mountains and face to face with the Pacific Ocean. This amazing road trip follows the wonderful forests of Western Washington to the most beautiful beaches of Southern California, where you can drive for miles and miles and have the scenery all to yourself.

The 500+ mile long trip requires at least 3 days of driving. Organize your route, choose the places you want to stop and enjoy the best that this route can offer. Some nice cities to include in your itinerary, besides San Francisco and Los Angeles, are Carmel-by-the-Sea, Monterey, San Simeon and Santa Barbara.

Some not-to-be-missed spots are:

  • Olympic National Park, Washington
  • Astoria & Fort Clatsop, Oregon
  • Mendocino, Califórnia
  • San Francisco, Califórnia
  • Monterey, Califórnia
  • San Simeon, Califórnia
  • San Luis Obispo, Califórnia
  • Los Angeles, Califórnia
  • San Diego, Califórnia

One very important tip: be prepared because some stretches can last 40 miles without a single stop at a restroom or gas station.

3. Blue Ridge Parkway

Blue-Ridge-Parkway-1024x688-1.jpg

How about an unforgettable road trip? Drive along the Blue Ridge Parkway, where the speed limit is at a comfortable 45 miles per hour and commercial vehicles are strictly prohibited.

Enjoy through the Appalachian Mountains, the 470 miles that run through Virginia and North Carolina. In addition, you can go hiking, picnicking, see some cultural exhibits, and have access to impressive views of the mountains in the region.

If you would like to take impressive pictures, you should travel during the fall season, when the landscape is full of colorful and fascinating leaves. Take at least 2 weeks to complete this journey.

Some not-to-be-missed spots are:

  • Mount Pisgah, North Carolina
  • Shenandoah, Virginia
  • Great Smoky Mountains, between North Carolina and Tennessee
  • Atlanta, Georgia

Experience United States by car!

This will make it easy to get to these beautiful and historical road trips in United States! Compare prices from over 200 car rental companies around the world and book a car with the best price and conditions.
