Are Priceline Express Deals Well Worth It?

When you request a discounted car rental quote from AutoSlash, we often direct you to Priceline to complete your booking. We always recommend tracking your rental with us for lower rates. If we find a better deal, you can simply cancel and rebook to lock in those savings–and often more than once. It’s a tried-and-true way to get the best possible price. The reason this approach works so well is that AutoSlash only offers pay-later rates, which don’t require a credit card to book. There are, however, times when a prepaid rate might save you some big bucks—especially when it comes to Priceline Express Deals. In some cases, we’re talking about a 40% savings over what you might be able to achieve with a pay-later rate—even with AutoSlash’s discounting magic. That’s not chump change.

Ask AutoSlash for a Quote on a Cheap Car Rental

Prepaid deals do have their place, and sometimes you can save a bundle by taking advantage of them, especially in times like the Car Rental Apocalypse 2022. Let’s take a closer look at Express Deals, Priceline’s most popular offering for car rental deal hunters.

Key Restrictions For Priceline Express Deals

A Priceline Express Deal is a deeply-discounted rate on a car rental that comes with some significant restrictions. Three key elements distinguish an Express Deal from a more traditional car rental offering:

  1. You must pay for your Express Deal car rental in full at the time of booking.
  2. You do not find out the rental car company until you pay for the rental.
  3. Express Deal rental reservations are non-refundable, non-transferable, and non-changeable even if the reservation is not use.

If you think those sound like some pretty onerous restrictions, you’re absolutely right. So why would someone want to book an Express Deal over a typical pay-later deal that AutoSlash offers? The answer is that Priceline Express Deals can deliver incredibly big savings. In some cases, we’re talking about a 40% savings over what you might be able to achieve with a pay-later rate—even with AutoSlash’s discounting magic. That’s not chump change. But it also doesn’t mean Priceline Express Deals are right for everyone in all situations.

How Do Express Deals Work?

Booking an Express Deal is pretty simple, but it’s crucial to understanding what you are getting. First, Priceline breaks down Express Deals into three tiers based on rental car brand names. For simplicity, we’ll refer to them as Tier 1, Tier 2, and Tier 3.

  • Tier 1 – You could be booked with Avis, Hertz or National.
  • Tier 2 – You could be booked with Alamo, Budget, Dollar, Sixt or Thrifty.
  • Tier 3 – You could be booked with Ace, Economy, Fox or Payless.

Choosing an Express Deal from among the Tier 1 and Tier 2 companies is pretty low-risk. Tier 1 are all high-quality companies that consistently deliver excellent service in the vast majority of cases. For the most part, the same applies to the Tier 2 companies. With the exception of Sixt, the companies are all mid-tier brands affiliated with major Tier 1 companies. All of these companies typically provide dependable service, although the wait for a car may be longer than with the majors.

Buyer Beware: Tier 3

Tier 3 is where we need a dose of caution. Payless, which is owned by Avis Budget Corporation, was a notorious “bad actor” back in the day. But it has cleaned up its act and now provides consistently decent service these days.

Fox is a discount brand that typically provides reliable, if not unremarkable, service. Lines, however, can sometimes be fairly long if you arrive at a busy time.

Ace and Economy, on the other hand, are wild cards. Typically, the pickup locations are franchises and often hit or miss. Some locations provide decent service, while others are abysmal. What’s more, locations are often are inconveniently located and may require two separate shuttles to get there and back. That can be tiresome, especially after a long flight. We’d exercise caution choosing an Express Deal from the Tier 3 companies.

When To Consider a Priceline Express Deal Car Rental

While the decision to book an Express Deal is an individual one, here are some general guidelines. It makes sense to book a Priceline Express Deal when:

  • Your plans are firm and you know you’ll be picking up the car as reserved.
  • Your pickup date is coming up soon, especially if it’s less than a week away.
  • There is significant savings over the best pay-later rate that AutoSlash finds.
  • You don’t mind waiting in line. You don’t normally use the skip the counter services offered by the rental companies.
  • Your prime motivator is price, not brand loyalty.

When To Avoid a Priceline Express Deal Car Rental

On the other hand, it does not make sense to book a Priceline Express Deal when:

  • Your plans aren’t firm, meaning there’s a decent chance you will not be able to pick up your car on the date reserved.
  • Your pickup date is a long way off. If your trip is still more than a few weeks away, AutoSlash’s tracking service will typically find you a lower rate over time.
  • The price difference compared to a discounted pay-later rate is small.
  • You’re a loyalty member with a major rental company and don’t want to wait in line at the rental counter. (In most cases, Express Deal customers can NOT make use of skip-the-counter services.)
  • You’re a local renter (not flying in) AND renting from a Tier 3 company AND need to drive more than 100 miles per day. (Mileage may be limited if you live in the area.)

How to Save More With a Priceline Express Deal

AutoSlash always helps you get the best deal possible, and sometimes Express Deals can be the best choice. For a limited time, you can save an additional 10% off Priceline’s already deeply-discounted Express Deal rates by searching for your rental through the bonus discount link.

Let AutoSlash Track Your Car Rental for Price Drops

Be sure to use Priceline’s filters to sort by “Lowest Total Price” and “Deal Type.” We’ve noticed that pricing and availability can sometimes be different between the desktop and mobile versions of their website, so if you want to ensure that you are getting the very best deal, try clicking the bonus discount link from both your phone/tablet and a laptop/desktop PC.

Why We Still Rely Upon Priceline for Inexpensive Flights

Last Updated on March 28, 2022 by Chris

Priceline-flight-deals-1024x576-2.jpg

Love to travel on the cheap? That means hunting down great prices for every element of a trip, from car rentals to flights. While there are scores of resources out there to help find cheap flights, we keep returning to trusty old Priceline.

It’s a misperception that all online travel agencies are all the same. While prices can be similar, Priceline stands out by offering some advantages and protections that other sites don’t.

Priceline became famous for its heavily-advertised opaque deals. You may remember “Name Your Own Price” bidding. Priceline doesn’t do those for flights or their newer Express Deal offerings. These deals are called “opaque” because the details of what you’re getting aren’t revealed until after you pay. These prices might be discounted from regular airfares, but to be honest, you can find better deals on other sites.

What you may not know is that Priceline is also a regular online travel agency (a.k.a. OTA) that can book any ordinary retail airfare that you find on other sites. You can usually find the exact same fare on other OTAs like Expedia or Orbitz, or even by booking directly on the airline’s own website.

Booking through Priceline has added advantages, though. Four factors that set it apart from the pack include the most generous cancellation policy in the industry, the most generous cashback bonus on the Internet, good customer service (if you use the right channel), and convenient itinerary management.

The Priceline Cancellation Loophole

In 2013, the U.S. Department of Transportation mandated that domestic air carriers must offer customers either the ability to hold an airfare for 24 hours before purchase or cancel a ticket within 24 hours of purchase. Most carriers have opted for the latter. This requirement doesn’t apply if the ticket is purchased within seven days of travel, but most carriers haven’t chosen to treat those cases separately.

The DOT only required airlines to honor this for tickets purchased directly, not through travel agents, but many large online travel agencies have instituted their own 24-hour cancellation windows in order to remain competitive.

Pro Tip: Milk the 96-Hour Cancellation Window

Priceline goes above and beyond the 24-hour cancellation window, though. You can cancel up until 11:29pm Eastern time on the next business day. That means that if you buy a ticket just after midnight, you actually have almost 48 hours to cancel for a full refund.

Check Airfare Prices on Priceline

Even better: Priceline’s rule pertains to the next business day. So if you buy a ticket at 12:01am on Friday morning, you can cancel anytime until 11:29pm on Monday. That means you can get almost a full 96 hours to consider your plans and cancel for a full refund.

If you like to track your airfare for price drops to make sure you’re getting the best price, this longer-than-usual cancellation window is key.

Pro Tip: Skirt the 7-Day Exclusion

On top of that, Priceline’s system doesn’t enforce the seven-day exclusion. If you book a ticket on JetBlue’s website within seven days of departure, the normal 24-hour cancellation policy doesn’t apply—but if you use Priceline, you can still cancel for a full refund by 11:29pm the next business day. This is a nice little loophole around JetBlue’s restriction.

The only airlines Priceline excludes from this cancellation/refund policy are Frontier and Spirit. Those airlines have required Priceline to follow the DOT requirements much more strictly. If your travel is seven or more days in the future, you have 23 hours and 29 minutes to cancel for a full refund, and if you book within 7 days of travel on either of those carriers, there’s no available refund at all.

When you’re taking advantage of an error fare, time is of the essence, because the airlines can discover it and yank availability at any time. Once you book and pay for an itinerary, feel free to start looking for something that works better. It’s nice to have an extra security blanket of being able to change if you find a better fare or a flight that works better with your schedule.

More Priceline Tips

Priceline Customer Service Tip

Priceline is a giant company and if you use the customer service phone number, you’ll get a helpful agent (usually based in the Philippines) who is only really good for simple questions or changes.

Check Flight + Hotel Packages on Priceline

When things get more complicated, though, try Priceline’s social media channels, and specifically Twitter. We have found that a direct message on Twitter can deliver an agent who responded quickly and competently.

Priceline Profile Tip

Priceline lets you save profiles with the your details and the details of travel companions, including your full name, date of birth, Trusted Traveler number (if you have one, you can get TSA PreCheck benefits on your trip). It’s a lot faster and easier to select your name from the menu instead of having to type everything in each time you book a ticket.

When Not to Use Priceline for Flights

Priceline is our go-to for booking airfares, but here’s when to look elsewhere:

  • If you fly JetBlue, book directly on JetBlue.com, because you get more TrueBlue points for doing so. Booking through a third-party travel agency earns half as many TrueBlue points as booking directly with JetBlue.
  • Some of the low-cost carriers like Allegiant, Spirit, and Frontier may show lower prices on their own websites, or they may offer discount coupons that only work on their own sites.
  • Southwest only shows their fares and availability on their own website.
  • When you have a mistake fare or a complicated itinerary, sometimes it doesn’t price out correctly on all the booking sites, including Priceline.

Note: AutoSlash may receive compensation on purchases made from chosen links.

It's Time to Book Your Rental Automobile for Springtime Break

Last Updated on February 7, 2022 by Elizabeth

What are your plans for Spring Break? For legions of school kids and college students in the United States, spring break is typically a week-long hiatus that can fall anytime between late February and mid-April, depending on the school.

Ask AutoSlash for a Quote on a Cheap Car Rental

Whether you’re a college student on break with friends or a parent planning a family vacation, you might need a rental car. Don’t assume you can use the pre-pandemic vacation game plan of locking down your flights and hotel before booking a rental car.

This year, the smart plan is to flip your strategy and book your rental car first. That’s because car rental prices are significantly higher now than they were pre-pandemic and also compared to 2021 prices.

How to Snag a Cheap Rental Car for Spring Break

Book early.

The best time to book your rental car is as soon as you start planning your trip. Unlike airline tickets, rental car reservations can usually be canceled without a penalty. A smart strategy is to ask AutoSlash for a quote early on, and then watch to see if prices go down.

Track your reservation.

It’s an epic chore to constantly check for lower rates but, AutoSlash will do this for you at no extra cost. After you book your car, ask AutoSlash to track your reservation. We’ll let you know if there’s a price drop so you can rebook at the lower rate.

Make the most of a weekly rate.

Car rental companies can offer very attractive weekly promo rates—but there are often some strings attached. Knowing a little about rental car logic will help you get the most bang for your buck out of a weekend rental.

Let AutoSlash Track Your Car Rental for Price Drops

Check both on and off airport.

Flying into an airport rental might be convenient, but it might also be pricey. A short Uber or Lyft ride to a nearby neighborhood rental location could cut your rate in half. But off-airport rates aren’t always cheaper, so it always pays to check both.

Spring Break Car Rentals for College Students

There are a few things college students should know about renting a car. If you’re under 25 years old, know that car rental companies have different policies about renting to young drivers. Most car rental companies will charge a daily fee to offset the risk of renting to younger drivers. The amount of the fee depends on your age and the rental company, but typically you can figure on paying around $30 extra per day, on average.

Spring Break Car Rentals for Families

If you’ve got young children, you might be wondering whether to bring or rent a car seat. Or maybe you’re traveling with an extended family. If you’ve got a big crew or several families vacationing together, you might be weighing the pros and cons of renting a passenger van.

How to Rent a Traveler Van

Last Updated on February 4, 2022 by Michael

rent-a-passenger-van-1024x576-2.jpg

If you need to rent a vehicle for a group of seven or more people, you have two choices: You can rent multiple cars or one passenger van with room for 12 or 15 people. Depending on how many passengers you have, a van is often the most economical way to go.

Major car rental companies typically include some 12- and 15-passenger vans their fleets. By far the most commonly offered van model is the Ford Transit.

When you’ve got a large group, renting a passenger van can have its upsides. They are easy to enter and exit through large sliding doors, plus there are typically two back doors for luggage storage.

Depending on your pick-up location, the decision may be made for you. Full-size vans can be hard to come by in some locations. For example at the Nashville airport, none of the brands operated by Hertz Global Holdings (Hertz, Dollar and Thrifty) offer passenger vans.

What You Need to Know About Renting a Passenger Van

You do not need a special license to drive a passenger van in the U.S. But if you’re renting in another country, there will likely be restrictions on the size of a van you can drive with a regular U.S. driver’s license.

Some rental car companies require the driver to be at least 25 years old. But age restrictions vary by company, so be sure to shop around.

Ask AutoSlash for a Quote on a Cheap Car Rental

Booking in advance is absolutely crucial. Where passenger vans are available, they tend to sell out quickly. We recommend booking as early as possible, especially during peak family vacation periods, such as summer, holidays, and long weekends.

Sometimes availability may be better at off-airport locations, while other times airport locations may be the only option. It’s always best to check both types of locations since pricing and availability can vary widely.

What to Do if a Passenger Van is Unavailable

If the rental car companies have no full-size vans available, the next-best option is likely to be two smaller vehicles or a minivan seating seven.

Also, keep in mind that full-size vans are almost never available for a one-way rental. Rental locations tend to want to keep those vehicles local for various reasons. If you need a one-way rental for more than seven people, you’ll have to go with multiple cars.

How to Determine Which Van to Rent

Be sure that you rent a van with enough space for your entire group. When renting a vehicle, the capacity is always noted on the vehicle confirmation screen. For instance, Budget offers no vehicle class above a 12-passenger van, so be sure to review the listed capacity at the time of booking.

fullsize-passenger-van-rental-tips-1.gif

These vans look identical, but one seats 12 people and the other seats 15.

Restrictions on Renting Passenger Vans

While the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has highlighted the safety issues inherent in 15-passenger vans, the United States is far more lenient than the rest of the world in allowing drivers to operate passenger vans. While a regular driver’s license might allow you to drive a 12- or 15-passenger van in the United States and many Mexican resort towns, in Europe you would be limited to vehicles seating nine people. In Canada, vehicles seating more than 12 passengers are considered commercial vehicles. That means you would need a commercial driver’s license to cross the U.S. / Canada border in a rented van.

Let AutoSlash Track Your Car Rental for Price Drops

Renting a passenger van can mean extra costs. Typically passenger vans do not come with unlimited mileage, so a long trip may incur additional mileage fees. Note also that your personal auto insurance and credit card coverage is unlikely to extend to rented passenger vans.

In addition, rental car companies will not rent a 12- or 15-passenger van to a driver under the age of 25.

Renting a car outside the U.S. and Canada? Always check to see if your credit card benefits include rental car insurance in the country you are visiting. In September 2017, American Express car rental insurance coverage was extended to three popular destinations.

Ask AutoSlash for a Quote on a Cheap Car Rental

Amex coverage now includes more countries and more vehicle types. In an age when program “enhancements” are too often bad news, American Express added value for its cardholders.

CDW / LDW In Ireland, Israel and Jamaica

Since 2017, collision and loss coverage (CDW / LDW) now applies to vehicles rented in Ireland, Israel and Jamaica.

Credit card policies often exclude Ireland, Israel and Jamaica, so the value here is significant. These are countries where you routinely get the hard sell at the rental counter. Even if your credit card covers you for damage to the vehicle, rental car agents often refuse to waive the insurance requirement unless you can prove your card covers you in that country.

If that happens to you, show them the American Express benefits guide.

No CDW / LDW in Italy, Australia and New Zealand

American Express rental car coverage still does not extend to three key countries: Italy, Australia, and New Zealand. But this is a moot point for Italy.

In Italy, car rentals include collision and theft insurance by law as a default. Car rental quotes automatically include coverage and there is no option to remove it. Typically, for your credit card coverage to take effect, you’d decline the coverage provided by the car rental company. In the case of rentals in Italy, you don’t have the option to decline this coverage. Bottom line: There’s no need for Amex to provide insurance in Italy since all renters automatically have it.

If you’re renting a car in Australia or New Zealand, you’ll need to use a premium card that covers you. Alternatively, you can pony up for the insurance provided by the car rental company. But that can sometimes cost more than the base rental cost itself.

How Different American Express Cards Compare for Travel Benefits

Not all Amex cards are created equal. To know what travel benefits your card includes, check out its policy:

  • Gold Card Travel Benefits
  • Platinum Card Travel Benefits
  • All Other American Express Travel Cards: Click on your card and then the “travel” tab.

What Else to Know About American Express Rental Car Insurance

Deciding which category of car to rent? Amex now covers all vehicles up to a maximum limit of $50,000. The one exception is vans for more than 8 passengers.

Let AutoSlash Track Your Car Rental for Price Drops

But be careful. Amex cardholders are still not covered for a long list of vehicles. These include expensive cars costing $50,000 or more and exotic cars regardless of value. Other exclusions are trucks, pickups, cargo vans, full-sized vans and full-sized SUVs like the Chevy Tahoe, Ford Expedition and GMC Suburban.

Be sure your rental car coverage extends to the vehicle you are renting before you drive off the rental lot. You don’t want to be unprotected if driving one of these vehicles.

Be Careful of Cars And Truck Rental Limited Miles When You Eliminate of State

Last Updated on February 4, 2022 by Michael

car-rental-unlimited-miles-1024x576-2.jpg

Planning a really long road trip in a rental car? Here’s a dirty little secret: Even when the rental car contract says “unlimited miles,” there can be limited miles.

There is a risk you’ll be placed on a rental company’s Do Not Rent list if you log excessive mileage.

Ask AutoSlash for a Quote on a Cheap Car Rental

A few years ago, a rock band rented a van from Avis for a North American tour. While in San Francisco, the van was burglarized. The band returned the vehicle to Avis and thought everything was cool. After all, the damage was reparable and the band had put 11,000 miles on the rental van in 20 days.

That’s an average of 550 miles per day. It turns out that Avis objected to the excessive mileage and put the band’s leader on the dreaded DNR list.

There are two common cases when you might discover that there are, in fact, limited miles. Typically these include:

  • The vehicle is a large or specialty vehicle. This might be a large passenger van, cargo van, SUV or an exotic car.
  • The reservation was made with a promotional offer.

Why You Might Be a High-Mileage Risk

Any rental car company can block you due to a perceived risk of racking up excessive miles. There are two major factors to consider: depreciation and service intervals. High mileage rapidly depreciates what was likely an expensive vehicle and depreciation is exacerbated if the mileage causes a vehicle to miss one or more scheduled service intervals. Miss two service intervals and the rental car company sees its asset diminished when it tries to sell it in the future. Essentially, the car goes from being a car sold directly by the manufacturer or a rental car company to being sold at a wholesale auction. If you get banned by a rental car companies due to high mileage, it’s because you are deemed at high risk of dropping the resale value of the rental car. For rental car companies, service intervals and records are critically important to rental car maintenance.

The reality is that very few renters need to be concerned about being banned due to excessive mileage. In general, you need to put a number of miles on the car that is greater than the service interval.

Limited Miles Can Land You on a Do Not Rent List

Three major U.S. firms—Hertz, Dollar and Thrifty—explicitly reserve the right to ban a user for driving more than 3,500 miles in 30 days. In other words, there are limited miles. Yet even after publishing this limit, these companies don’t automatically restrict rental privileges.

The policies of other rental companies are even less clear. For instance, Enterprise states that a renter is to return the vehicle in the same condition, making an exception for normal wear and tear. That ambiguity can leave drivers in a tricky situation.

Sixt has notoriously strict geographical limits. Sadly, none of the other rental companies have written statements about what can trigger a “high mileage” ban.

Worse yet, placement on the “Do Not Rent” list tends to irrevocable.

Let AutoSlash Track Your Car Rental for Price Drops

Since rental car companies don’t have clear policies on what generates a ban, here are three things renters do to minimize the risk.

  1. If the rental car agent asks how far you’re driving, be sure to disclose your travel plans to see if there might be a problem.
  2. If you belong to a frequent renter program and select your own car at airports, you might find the vehicles furthest away from a service interval by looking at “Next Service Due” stickers on the windshields. At the least, ask what steps to take if you are about the pass the mileage noted on the sticker.
  3. If you’re taking an exceptionally long trip, look into one-way rentals. Even companies like Sixt waive their ordinarily restrictive geographic ranges when a driver has a one-way journey.

The Automobile Rental Armageddon Is Remaining in 2022

Last Updated on January 31, 2022 by Jonathan

car-rental-apocalypse-1024x576-2.jpg

Bad news, travelers. As Americans begin planning their 2022 getaways, many are blissfully oblivious to the car rental apocalypse that has cast a shadow over the travel landscape for the past year. Folks may think they can simply go back to the vacation game plan they relied upon before the pandemic – lock down their flights first, reserve a hotel soon afterward and book a rental car whenever they finally get around to it.

But doing things the old way won’t work anymore. Through the early months of the pandemic, car rentals were dirt cheap. We’re talking $5 per day in Hawaii cheap. But, alas, those days are long gone.

Car Rental Prices are Still Sky High

A few alarming statistics can illuminate the issue in a snap. Car rental rates in December 2021 were up 50% compared to December 2020 and up 60% compared to December 2019. In short, car rental prices are significantly higher now than they were pre-pandemic and also compared to the first year of the pandemic.

We were seeing sky high peak rates last summer, but the general expectation was that summer of 2022 would be better. So far, that is not the case. Consider where car rental prices are for a July 2022 booking.

  • The average price for a one-week rental in Hawaii if you were to book today is around $800 before tax (about $113 per day). That is twice as high as we’ve ever seen when booking six months out.
  • The average price for a one-week July rental in Anchorage, Alaska is over $1,600, or $231 per day.  Again, that’s pre-tax.
  • Rates at Glacier Park Airport (FCA), another hotspot from last summer, are running around $1,380 per week, or $197 per day, in July.
  • In New York City, car rental rates for July are running around $90 per day
  • In a sampling of a dozen major airports around the country, rates for July hover around $60-$70 per day.

Car Rental Supply Remains Low

The U.S. is still experiencing a major rental car shortage, so waiting until the last minute to lock down a vehicle means (a) paying through the nose; (b) being priced out of the market; or (c) not even having the option to overpay because every car will be sold out.

Ask AutoSlash for a Quote on a Cheap Car Rental

Why is there a rental car shortage when so many Americans are still avoiding travel?  While demand for car rental is still down from pre-pandemic levels, more and more people are renting cars as they get vaccinated. Americans also have loads of vacation time squirreled away. But demand is only half of this car rental apocalypse.

What is happening on the supply side of the equation is truly scary. In the early days of the Covid-19 pandemic, rental car companies sold off large portions of their vehicle fleets in an attempt to “right-size” for rock-bottom demand. They sold off as many vehicles as they could, as quickly as they could.

Even then, the rental companies still struggled mightily. The pandemic forced Hertz into bankruptcy. Soon Advantage and E-Z soon followed into Chapter 11. Europcar, the new parent company of Fox, underwent major financial restructuring to survive. The net effect was fewer rental car companies with bare-bones fleets. For most of 2020, that wasn’t a problem. Demand was down and the rental companies did not envision a quick recovery on the horizon.

How to Land the Lowest Price

Let AutoSlash Track Your Car Rental for Price Drops

This year, like last year, the cost of your rental car may end up being the most expensive component of your trip – and that’s if you are able to snag one at all. The problem is going to be especially acute for travelers who want or need larger vehicles like minivans, full-size passenger vans and full-size SUVs. These tend to sell out most quickly and may already be gone even when booking weeks ahead of time.

How to escape the car rental apocalypse? To avoid overpaying for a rental car and ensure that you snag a vehicle, you will need to book a car rental as far ahead as possible. Folks who book their flight and hotel but figure they’ll worry about their car rental last will do so at their peril.

Do You Required Personal Crash Insurance Policy When You Lease a Car?

Last Updated on March 3, 2022 by Michael

personal-accident-insurance-1024x576-2.jpg

When renting a car, it’s important to know what insurance you already have. Rental car companies will try to sell you coverage with an insurance product called Personal Accident Insurance (PAI). But do you need it?

Supplemental coverage typically includes collision insurance that protects the rental car itself. There’s also liability insurance in the event you cause damage to another person’s property or injury to another person.

Ask AutoSlash for a Quote on a Cheap Car Rental

But neither of these policies cover accidental death benefits and emergency medical expenses for all passengers in the rental car. To fill this gap, rental car companies sell another insurance product called Personal Accident Insurance (PAI).

What is Personal Accident Insurance in a Rental Car?

Personal Accident Insurance (PAI) covers accidental death and emergency medical expense benefits to the renter and all passengers in the rental car. PAI is typically lumped together with another product called Personal Effects Coverage (PEC), which can bring the total additional cost to $5-11 per day, depending on where you are renting, plus taxes and fees.

If you rent from any of the major rental car companies, the PAI option will be fairly similar because the coverage itself is provided by third-party insurers:

  • AvisBudget Group: Avis, Budget, Payless
  • Enterprise Holdings: Alamo, Enterprise, National
  • Hertz Global Holdings: Dollar, Hertz, Thrifty

It’s important to know is that this insurance may duplicate coverage you already have through your health insurance and life insurance policies, and your personal policies are likely to be the primary coverage. This means that your own policies will typically pay out first, and when the policy limits have been reached, the PAI will kick in.

Let AutoSlash Track Your Car Rental for Price Drops

Typically, the medical coverage limit is usually around $3,500 and the ambulance benefit $150. Typically the death benefit is $175,000 for the renter and $17,500 for the passenger.

The Risk of Not Buying PAI When Renting a Car

What happens if you don’t have health insurance or life insurance and you decline the PAI? In a nutshell, if there is an accident, you or your estate will be responsible for paying medical costs for everyone in your rental car.

Just how to Avoid the Upsell at the Rental Car Counter

Last Updated on March 3, 2022 by Michael

rental-car-upsell-1024x576-2.jpg

Want to know how to rent a car without feeling fleeced? Stop thinking of counter agents as customer service staff and start thinking of them as salespeople working on commission. That’s the secret to avoiding the upsell at the rental car counter.

This prepares you for what, inevitably, happens when you pick up the car. Upselling is an essential part of a salesperson’s toolbox. They’ll tell you that buying car rental insurance will give you peace of mind. For only a few dollars more, you can have a GPS in your vehicle. You can add satellite radio for a pittance, you’ll hear. Before you know it, your weekend rental just doubled in price—and you aren’t even behind the wheel yet.

Rental car staff are sales agents whose goal is to maximize profits. To insulate yourself somewhat from upsells and hard sells, you should sign up for frequent renter programs, reserve online (rather than speak to an agent), and to always carefully read rules and conditions on a rental.

Ask AutoSlash for a Quote on a Cheap Car Rental

When you call a reservations line, the staff member is not going to search more than 1,000 rates to find the lowest possible option. If you walk up to the counter without a reservation, the desk agent is trained to gauge the highest price you are willing to pay. The goal is to drive up the total by convincing you to accept products and services that may well be unnecessary. Contrast that experience with getting a quote from AutoSlash, where our goal is to minimize your confirmed total.

Remember, Rental Car Agents are Salespeople

Perusing the career page of a rental car company’s website is like lifting a veil. Counter staff members typically require six to 12 months of previous sales experience.

Let AutoSlash Track Your Car Rental for Price Drops

In the eyes of the rental car company, the counter agent’s job is to bring in more revenue for the company, so that agent gets awarded for convincing everyday renters to add products, services, and upgrades on their reservations. Top rental car agents often earn three to five times their base rate through commissions, incentives, and bonuses. Other agents are actively seeking to increase sales for promotion opportunities. In both cases, there’s a strong financial incentive to push products and services you don’t need at the counter.

What's the most effective Method to Pay for a Rental Vehicle?

Last Updated on March 3, 2022 by Kristin

best-way-to-pay-rental-car-1024x576-2.jpgPhoto credit: Rawpixel

So you’re looking to rent a car and wondering which credit card to use. Or maybe you’re wondering if it’s okay to use your debit card instead of a credit card. Or perhaps you don’t have a credit card or debit card and want to pay with cold, hard cash. Considering that the major rental companies and card companies have different policies, the answer may not appear straightforward. But don’t worry—we have a few guidelines for choosing the best payment method.

Credit Cards: Easy with Extra Protection and Perks

If you have a favorite credit card or perhaps multiple cards, there are several reasons why paying for your rental car reservation with a credit card is the best option. Paying with a credit card brings several layers of protections and benefits you won’t get with other payment methods.

Ask AutoSlash for a Quote on a Cheap Car Rental

For starters, most credit cards come with some kind of car rental insurance, which means you can decline the pricey CDW offered at the rental car counter. Most credit cards provide secondary coverage that kicks in after your personal auto insurance limit is reached. Some credit cards offer primary rental car coverage, which means that if you are involved in an accident, your auto insurance company does not get involved at all. If you have a credit card that offers this benefit, it usually makes sense to use this card when renting a car, especially if you have recently filed a claim with your auto insurance and would prefer not to risk your premium getting jacked up.

Do you have multiple credit cards? Compare the benefits and perks that come with each one. Using a credit card that delivers tons of great travel benefits can save a significant wad of money, since you often get free services or cash back for purchases you’ll be making on your trip. Other good bets are credit cards that have no annual fee or charge 0% interest.

Reasons to Pay for a Rental Car with a Credit Card

Credit cards can also provide support if you have to dispute a charge at the end of the rental process. Credit cards have better customer protections for disputes than debit cards do. When you pay with a debit card, the rental company can potentially take an extra amount from your checking account if there are extra repair costs or fees.

In general, rental car companies will hold an amount on your card to cover the cost of the rental plus a deposit to cover any incidentals or additional fees. For example, Enterprise will hold the cost of the rental plus a 20% security deposit for incidentals. The time it takes for the hold to be removed from your card depends on the rental company and the card issuer, but in most cases you will get these funds freed up more quickly when using a credit card. Enterprise, for example, will release the hold immediately when credit card customers return the vehicle in good shape. Debit cardholders, on the other hand, have to wait five to 10 business days and have to maintain that cushion in their bank accounts in the meantime.

Check Out These Recommended Credit Cards for Travelers

Lastly, it’s simply easier to pay with a credit card. Rental car companies typically accept a wider variety of credit cards and may require debit cardholders to jump through a few extra hoops, such as booking 24 hours in advance, providing multiple forms of identification or even undergoing a credit check.

Debit Cards: Doable but More Complicated

If you are a young driver, you may not have established credit yet. If you don’t have a credit card, it is generally possible to rent a car with a debit card. While some car companies have age restrictions, it is usually easier to rent from Thrifty and Dollar using a debit card. Thrifty’s Blue Chip Rewards members can waive the higher security deposit by using a Visa-branded debit card.

Let AutoSlash Track Your Car Rental for Price Drops

Cash: Try to Avoid

Cash may be king for certain things, but a rental car reservation is not one of them. If you want to pay for a rental car with cash, be prepared to begin the process more than a month in advance and jump through many hoops. For example, Hertz and Thrifty require signing up for an ID card that can take a month to receive, not to mention providing many pieces of personal documentation and undergoing a credit check. Many rental companies will not allow you to secure a transaction with cash at all, so this option should be a last resort.
